11 Home Remedies for a Sore Throat

Sore throats can hit you in the most inconvenient of times. For those times when acetaminophen isn't enough and time is of the essence, you are going to unleash all hell and use every single home remedy in the book. Since a book is beyond the scope of this post, we picked out eleven classics for you to try out. You can try these out individually, or if you're adventurous, you can try mixing them all into one super-drink.

Slippery Elm Bark

The piece that helps is mucilage, which is a gel-like matter that thickens when mixed with water. Take three of four times a day to coat the throat and reduce irritation.

Licorice Root

Licorice has long been used and known as an effective sore throat remedy. You can drink a daily cup of licorice root tea and/or gargle a solution of root powder and water.

Marshmallow Herb

Drink as a tea. This herb has been used just as long as licorice and known to be quite effective.

Honeysuckle Flower

 It tastes and smells sweet, and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for sore throats. Drop onto tongue or add to your tea.

Ginger Tea

A traditional remedy in Korean medicine, you can take raw, freshly minced ginger and boil in water. Add honey to sweeten, and watch your sore throat get soothed in seconds.

Salt and Warm Water

Universal, tried and true classic.

Corn Syrup

Gargle a diluted mixture of corn syrup and water.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is one of those hidden gems of home remedies. Dilute with water, mix with lemon, salt, and honey, and drink it warm. It's soothing and effective!

Black Pepper Powder

You can mix black pepper with warm water and gargle, or you can mix with honey (without water) and swallow. The honey will lubricate the throat and the pepper will do its magic.

Onion

The equivalent of napalm, biting into a washed raw onion like would an apple will carpet bomb your throat and cause absolute destruction to the irritants within. You will be on the floor crying as the onion works its incendiary fury, but you will also wake up with a new, cleansed throat.

Honey

You can take as is, or mix with black pepper as mentioned above.

Extra Insurance

If you feel like you need just a bit more weaponry in your anti-sore throat arsenal, then out a throat soother or a cold buster tea for extra insurance.

  3. I have never thought of drinking loose leaf tea, ever. Not sure why now. As an exclusive tea drinker I have always been envious of my other half being able to make a pot of coffee in the machine and drink from it throughout the day. I am now wondering if coffee machines could be used with loose leaf tea....I guess perhaps not but I will try one of the tea filters in my mug and see how that goes.
